NAKBA STORIES: Um Khillo
This dear woman is Um Khillo. She fled from her home in Jaffa in 1948 at the age of 14, when she was put on a boat that brought her to Beirut, Lebanon. She has lived there ever since. She lost 2 sons in the struggle for Palestine.
We will add a translation of this conversation soon, but even if you don't speak Arabic, it's not hard to feel her message at the heart level.
Um Khillo lives in Al-Daoud, one of 42 "Palestinian Gathering Communities" across Lebanon. The community has had a severe water shortage, sometimes going 4 days at a time without running water, due to dilapidated infrastructure. Thankfully, in 2015, the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation worked with the United Nations Development Program to upgrade the water system.
