Long story short....

Ziyad was born in Deir al-Balah refugee camp in the Gaza Strip in 1960, and immigrated as a nazeh (displaced person) at the age of 7 to Saudi Arabia. In 1983, he came to the United States to get his masters' degree at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. 

Kathy was born and raised in Chicago and led a very ordinary life until...

Ziyad and Kathy met in Chicago, and were married in 1985. They have 4 adult children, 2 children-in-law, and a million grandcats. Ziyad works as a construction manager, and Kathy, not the cats) writes and speaks about justice in Palestine and multicultural, interfaith dialogue and understanding.
